The Blue Millennium Project: Managing Fisheries for Biodiversity (2001)
The report was one of eight thematic reviews prepared for the Biodiversity Planning Support Program (BPSP), established by the United Nations Development Program and the United Nations Environment Program, with core financial support from the GEF. The BPSP was created to help countries strengthen national capacity to prepare and implement National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans in compliance with Article 6 of the Convention on Biological Diversity. Additional funding provided by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) made possible the addition of more case study authors and greater consideration of aquatic biodiversity issues in development.
The fisheries study presented here, coordinated by World Fisheries Trust, consists of three chapters and one Appendix. Its main audience is people in a position to affect national decisions and policies on the sustainable use of aquatic biodiversity.
Chapter 1: Synthesis Report- Biodiversity and Fisheries: A Primer for Planners is an overview of fisheries and biodiversity designed to give planners a good understanding of the most important issues and concepts. The primer includes a comprehensive Bibliography.
Chapter 2: Case Studies on Managing Fisheries for Biodiversity contains papers presented at the Thematic Workshop Blue Millennium: Managing Global Fisheries for Biodiversity, funded by UNEP and IDRC and held in Victoria, BC in June 2001.
