Gorge Waterway Discovery Centre
In Esquimalt
The GWDC came to be through a partnership between local NGOs including World Fisheries Trust, the Township of Esquimalt and sponsorship by the Victoria Foundation . The centre, which opened on Ocean's day (June 8) in 2008, provides students and visitors with an amazing hands-on opportunity to explore the ecology of our area (specifically the area around the Gorge Waterway). By observing, discussing and interacting with live aquatic animals, our watershed model and the surrounding terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, visitors discover that you can learn a lot about an animal just by taking the time to look at it. They also will find out ways they can get involved with local conservation and stewardship initiatives and realize that everyone can do things that help our local environment.
In its short history of operating this way, it has reached remarkably over 2500 people and provided exciting opportunities for 40 volunteers.
Project partners include:
WestWind SeaLab Supplies, SeaChange Marine Conservation Society, Seaquaria in Schools, Esquimalt Parks and Recreation, Gorge Waterway Action Society and Gorge Waterway Initiative
With generous support from:
